There are about 2000 species of wild flowers in Cyprus including about 140 endemic species. About one quarter of these plants are in the Akamas peninsula. Some of the endemic species are illustrated in this book. The book includes a general account of the classification of plants. Orchids in Cyprus are abundant but of course seasonal and the area can be considered a “Hot Spot” for wildflowers in general and for orchids. The spring orchids can be found between February and May whilst those in the mountain areas are found rather later towards mid-June. A list of areas of botanical interest are given in the book. A brief account of the structure of orchids and their classification in genera is described. The orchids are presented in their various genera and illustrations are available for nearly all species. In general the book should enable identification of the orchids to be found in Cyprus. These orchids occur in the following genera and their properties are briefly given: Anacamptis 9 species (Barlia 1 species now classified as Himantoglossum) Cephalanthera 1 species Dactylorhiza 1 species Epipactis 2 species Himantoglossum 1 species Limodorum 1 species Neotinea 1 species Ophrys 20 species Orchis 5 species Platanthera 2 species Serapias 5 species Spiranthes 1 species Brief biographical details are given for the botanists who described the various orchids.
